Kian Meng-Pei Jing win Korea Open, end five-year title drought

KUALA LUMPUR: Independent mixed doubles Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing finally ended their five-year wait for a title when they clinched the Korea Open in Suncheon on Sunday.

In the final, the world No 10 Malaysians, who have not dropped a single game this week, defeated local pair and sixth seeds Ko Sung Hyun-Eom Hye Won 21-15, 21-18 to win their maiden Super 500 title.

Kian Meng-Pei Jing, who last tasted success at the 2017 Malaysia Masters, are also the only Malaysians after Lee Chong Wei (2010, 2012, 2013) to win the Korea Open title since the tournament's inception in 1991.

The Malaysians, who have reached at least the quarter-final stage in all tournaments this season, are expected to move up to No 9 on the world rankings following their success in Korea.

Kian Meng-Pei Jing pocketed US$28,440 (RM120,000) for their win, while Sung Hyun-Hye Won settled for US$13,680 (RM58,000).
